“Keeping Your Head Up” is the euphoric new single from 19-year-old British singer/songwriter BIRDY. Previously known for her extensive catalog of piano-laden covers—most notably her STUNNING debut single, a version of Bon Iver‘s “Skinny Love,” (a song I was so captured with, I bought the sheet music so I could sing along) on “Keeping Your Head Up” we get to hear a completely different side of Birdy.
“I hope the song is inspiring, it’s meant to feel powerful and uplifting. It’s about finding a light in the dark, having the strength to hold on to it and overcome the times when we feel completely lost.”
“Keeping Your Head Up” is decidedly more up-tempo than what we’re used to hearing out of Birdy. Co-produced with Steve Mac (Kelly Clarkson, Jess Glynne, Selena Gomez), the song offers a more energized, empowered vocal delivery from the singer, and seamlessly skirts both the top and dance genres without completely eclipsing her singer/songwriter sensibilities. Check out Birdy transform into a proper pop star, literally right before your eyes, singing the song live for the first time at the BRITs Launch show. I’m excited about this new era!
“Keeping Your Head Up,” which is available now (iTunes / Spotify) via Atlantic Records gives us the first taste of new music from Birdy since last year’s release of “Let It All Go,” a duet with fellow-British singer/songwriter, RHODES. Birdy‘s last record, 2013’s Fire Within featured the Top 10 single “Wings” which was later covered by Nothing But Thieves. Birdy will release her third studio album, Beautiful Lies March 25th.
