Let’s Talk About MNEK

After writing, producing and remixing hits for the likes of Mutya Keisha Siobhan (AKA the original Sugababes), Little Mix, Rudimental, Misha B, AME, Bastille and others, 19-year old pop music WUNDERKIND MNEK is FINALLY emerging from behind the curtain and releasing his own music. Signed to Virgin EMI in the UK, MNEK will release his FIRST official single, “Wrote A Song About You,” off his forthcoming debut album on September 1st. Listen MNEK‘s ultimate pop BANGER BELOW. While the song starts out slow and sad, it doesn’t take long (32 seconds to be precise) before it transforms into a full on FLOOR-FILLING, funktafied dance anthem. WHOOSH. I need a towel. The song, which delves into feelings for a past love, follows the release of a “BUZZ” track called “Every Little Word,” which I had stuck on repeat for nearly an entire month. While “Every Little Word” wasn’t an official single, it did receive its own video and remix package (including one by Hot Chip‘s Joe Goddard – BELOW)

MNEK‘s passion, extreme appreciation for and impressive knowledge of all music genres; specifically dance, pop, R&B and hop from the 1980s, 1990s all the way to the present, can be heard in his productions, all of which infuse those signature 90s vibes. Got to give this guy props for holding off this long on releasing his own material. He could easily have tried to launch his own career as a singer YEARS ago, but instead chose to study songwriting and producing, in turn giving himself AMPLE time to develop his own signature sound…which, after listening to his first two tracks…I think he has done.

This guy has been producing hit records since the age of 14, scored a smash hit for Gorgon City (“Ready For Your Love“), earned a Grammy nod for Duke Dumont‘s “Need U (100%)” and worked on new music for Diplo, Clean Bandit and Sinead Hartnett. Hard to believe he’s accomplished so much before the age of 20.
