Well this is exciting…Jamie Scott has announced a new record deal. A SOLO record deal. While we don’t have the new album’s release date as of yet, we DO have a title and label; My Hurricane will be out later this year on Virgin Records. The album’s title track will also serve as the lead single, which you can download right now. Listen to “My Hurricane” below.
I love that “My Hurricane” sounds nothing like Graffiti6…nothing like Jamie Scott & The Town (his band, with whom he released an album back in 2007) and totally different from the soul/R&B sound of his first stab at solo stardom. He completely re-invents himself with each and every musical incarnation and to me, that’s impressive. The one constant, Scott’s distinctive voice which is showcased on every one of his projects, displaying both impressive power as well as range, not to mention a beautiful falsetto. “My Hurricane” is an “all-out devil-may-care love song” offering up a delicious little taster of what’s to come. Well, consider me enticed.
So let me get this straight…not only is the handsome and incredibly talented Graffiti6 lead vocalist going solo, but he’s going solo, signed to a major label?! F**king amazing. In addition to working and touring with indie-pop-soul outfit, Graffiti6, Scott’s collaborative effort with TommyD, Scott has been making mad bank writing hit songs for One Direction (“Story Of My Life,””You & I“), Christina Perri, Ed Sheeran, Ron Sexsmith, Enrique Iglesias and Marsha Ambrosius to name a few. In his spare time (crazy to me that he has any!), Scott starting writing for himself, including what the press release refers to as “intensely personal songs sparked by his recently becoming a father and husband.” Oooh….sing to me Jamie! The album is described as;
“unabashedly emotional but gracefully sophisticated in both its lush and lovely 70s-rock-folk-influenced sound and intimate storytelling of an autographically inspired couple.”
The whole record apparently tells the story of a fictional couple, following their entire life, one song at a time from when they meet for the first time to the time they die. Yikes…sounds heavy…at least heavy towards the end, but I like the idea of an album telling a full story. According to Scott;
“Writing this album, I got fascinated with the idea of growing old with someone and then eventually losing the person who means everything to you. Hurricane is meant to represent that journey, and the message of it is that you’ve got to just go for it, live big and live brave and never get caught up in regret.”
Needless to say…I’m beyond excited. I’ve been basically waiting to hear Jamie Scott on his own since 2004 with his UK debut single, 2004’s “Just” (which peaked at #29 on the UK Singles Chart). It continued of course with all subsequent solo releases…errr…well, that would be “Searching” which peaked at #32. I also enjoyed his releases with Jamie Scott & The Town (“When Will I See Your Face Again, Standing In The Rain,” etc.). Can’t wait to hear the new stuff!
