While Canadian songstress
Nelly Furtado was due to release
The Spirit Indestructible, her first English-language album since 2006’s
Loose, earlier this summer, extenuating circumstances forced the singer/songwriter to push the release back to
September 11th. To tide fans over (and boost momentum going into the album’s release) Furtado dropped a second single, the album’s title track, on
July 31st.
“Spirit Indestructible,” like it’s predecessor, “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better),” was produced by hitmaker Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Musically-speaking I’m feeling this track a bit more than “Big Hoops.” The first minute of the song recalls moments from Nelly Furtado‘s 2000 debut, Whoa, Nelly!, with the singer serving up SERIOUS emotive vocals, all the while backed by a dreamy lullaby-like synth-harpsichord melody. Following that lovely intro, “Spirit Indestructible” shifts gears rather drastically, delving deep into some seriously atmospheric Darkchild-produced madness. Complete with beautiful harmonies and slick production, “Spirit Indestructible” turns into a rich, contemporary-sounding pop ballad with plenty of urban/electro undertones to satisfy even the most discriminating ear. LOVE everything about this song.
The video is also a thing of flawless beauty. Shot on Vancouver’s
GORGEOUS Grouse Mountain, it’s absolutely
EPIC. If you found yourself mesmerized by Nelly’s Los Angeles stunning rooftop performance in the “
Say It Right” video, the scenery on “
Spirit Indestructible” is 10 x better, plus no closeups on
Timberland‘s lips and ears. The clip follows up the inspirational
lyric video which features actual footage from
Spencer West‘s climb up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and financial support for clean water projects in Africa.
While the chartability of this song here in America is questionable at best, it’s definitely heightening my excitement about the new album. Production on The Spirit Indestructible was mostly handled by Darkchild and Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Jazmine Sullivan) so you know it’s going to be eargasm-inducing, that’s for certain!
The Spirit Indestructible is out September 11th via Interscope Records.
