Following the success of “Wide Awake,” her ninth #1 at Top 40 Radio and her tenth consecutive #1 on Billboard‘s Hot Dance Club Play Chart, I think it’s fairly safe to say that pop star Katy Perry‘s sophomore album, Teenage Dream is a relative success. The song was co-written by Perry, singer/songwriter Bonnie McKee, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Henry Walter and produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut. Featured on the Teenage Dream album special edition/re-release, The Complete Confection, “Wide Awake” is as catchy as anything else Perry’s released from this album era, and looking at the team of hitmakers behind her, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
As it stands right now, Katy Perry ties Rihanna‘s record for the most #1’s in the nearly twenty year history of Billboard‘s Nielsen BDS-based Mainstream Top 40 Chart, and that’s nothing to laugh at! “Wide Awake” was written for Katy Perry‘s 3D feature film, brilliantly entitled: Katy Perry: Part of Me which has already earned more than $24 million domestically and is approaching the $30 million mark in international box office returns, making it the fourth biggest music documentary film of all time, beating out heavy hitters like Madonna, U2 and The Jonas Brothers. Quite amazing, if you think about it.
Katy Perry DAZZLES in the visually remarkable video for “Wide Awake,” directed by Tony T. Datis. The video plays out like a spectacular fairy tale with some elements tastefully borrowed from Alice In Wonderland, Snow White and others. Some of the visual effects are breathtaking, including a gorgeous labyrinth and a poisoned magic strawberry, while still others are a little hokey…the khaki-clad Minotaurs, for instance. The video takes some of it’s visual, hair and makeup cues from past Perry epics, most notably “Firework” (more sparklers flying out of Perry’s chest) and “E.T.” Considering it’s the final single to be released from Teenage Dream, it only makes sense that Perry’s label, Capitol Records, went all out. With six #1 singles and eight top 5’s, Katy Perry has earned a vacation, wouldn’t you say?
