[Hot Video Alert] Justin Bieber – Boyfriend

    Justin Bieber Boyfriend

I feel a FEVER comin’ on…specifically a BIEBER fever.  To the delight of screaming little girls all over the world, Justin Bieber premiered the video for new single “Boyfriend” on MTV and VEVO at 7:50 PM this evening.  I’m embarrassed and a little bit ashamed to admit that “Boyfriend” marks the very first Justin Bieber post here on Music Is My King Size Bed.  So go easy on me!

Written by Justin alongside Mike Posner, Mason Levy (JoJo, Cee-Lo Green), Matthew Musto, and produced by Posner and Levy, “Boyfriend” was released worldwide March 26th.  Since it’s release, the song has already hit Top 5 in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the UK and the U.S., going straight to #1 in his native Canada.  Stylistically, the song sounds a bit edgier than past Bieber efforts, creating the perfect blend blend of pop, R&B and hip hop.  “Boyfriend” has a grittier, grimier club sound than one might expect out of the 18 year old but the style definitely suits him.  For many artists, deviating from the formula that made you a star is a dangerous concept, but in Justin Bieber’s case, “Boyfriend” seems like a natural musical evolution.

Lyrically, the song is pretty much void of any real substance, as evidenced in the hook: “If I was your boyfriend, never let you go/Keep you on my arm girl, you’d never be alone/I can be a gentleman, anything you want/If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go, I’d never let you go.”  Not necessarily a bad thing.  Back at the beginning of March, Bieber appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where explained what the song was about…sort of; “The song, it’s basically I’m talking to this girl, [saying] if I was your boyfriend, I would never let you go.” That’s deep, Justin.  That being said, not every song needs to be filled with passionate, heartfelt lyrics.  It is what it is, and that’s a hip-hop infused feel good summer jam.  The song has earned comparisons to Pharrell Williams, N*SYNC, Usher, and even solo Justin Timberlake, especially when he hits his falsetto. Bieber definitely sounds more mature on “Boyfriend,” than on his breakout hit “Baby.”  Maybe even…dare I say SEXIER? Oh boy…Bieber Fever has DEFINITELY set in.

The SCORCHING-hot Director X (The Wanted – “Chasing The Sun,” “Glad You Came“; Nelly Furtado – “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better),” “Promiscuous“) music video features a bevvy of international-looking beauties lusting after Biebs while he croons seductively into the camera.  While there’s not a set story line, the video does features plenty of eye candy in the form of beautiful women, fast cars and of course Mr. Bieber himself, who appears to be putting the moves on a Selena Gomez-look alike. If you don’t have the fever yet, after this video you might need to lie down.

    Justin Bieber Believe

Boyfriend” is the first single taken from Bieber’s upcoming third album, Believe, due June 19th on Island/RBMG.  The album continues in the same direction as “Boyfriend,” going in a more R&B/hip-hop direction, with rumored collaborations by Kanye West, Drake, Cody Simpson and Lil’ Wayne.  During a recent appearance on The Voice, when Bieber played the first clip of the music video, he confirmed (at Carson Daly‘s somewhat scripted request) that he would perform the song live for the first time on TV during the reality competition’s finale.

Boyfriend” is available to download (iTunes US/iTunes UK) so go snag it.  Damn it Justin Bieber. I’m far too old to have the FEVER, but there’s no escaping it now.
