If I’m honest, it wasn’t until I heard her collaboration with MØ that I really stopped and took notice of Swedish singer/songwriter Elliphant. It wasn’t anything personal, just not my thing. Then, last year, seemingly out of nowhere, energetic Danish indie-electronic-pop artist MØ released “One More,” an uber vibey, roll-down-your-windows-and-BLAST-THE-F**K-out-of-it synthpop gem of a song and EVERYTHING changed. Elliphant‘s latest track is yet another game-changer for me. “Love Me Badder,” combines a genre I love – synthpop with a genre that just never connected with me on any level – dancehall. Oh, AND it’s a ballad! Check it out.

So…TO RECAP…”Love Me Badder” is a dancehall-tinged, synthpop ballad. SAY WHAT? Here’s the thing…IT’S A JAM. Consider me a fan now, girl. Looking forward to hearing what other vibes you bring on your record. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by any of this…after all, she’s a Swede. If I’ve learned nothing during my time a music blogger, it’s never to judge something after one listen. I’ll be going back through Elliphant‘s catalog this week and seeing what I missed the first time around.
“Love Me Badder” was released yesterday via Record Company TEN/Kemosabe, (Dr. Luke‘s own record label) officially serving up the FIRST TASTE of what we can expect from Elliphant‘s forthcoming album, due out in the autumn. Download “Love Me Badder” (iTunes) and stream-the-F**K out of it (Spotify). The video was directed by LA-based directing team Skinny (AKA David Hache and Marc-Edouard Leon) and, while it doesn’t tell a happy story (look out for a violent struggle in a car, followed by a crash), it is stunningly shot and Elliphant looks gorgeous as ever.
If you fancy seeing Elliphant live and you live in NYC, be sure and catch her next month at Santos Party House (presented by one of my FAV tastemakers Pigeons & Planes) June 18th. On June 20th Elliphant will make her Firefly Music Festival debut in Dover, Delaware before jetting off to Europe for some festival dates. I’m hoping I can catch her here in NYC! For a list of tour dates, check out her official website.
