Ellie Goulding quietly released the video for “Explosions,” the beautiful and understated third single off her sophomore release, Halcyon. Produced and co-written by John Fortis, “Explosions” was one of the clear favorites on the U.S. leg of her Halcyon Days Tour (which I caught last month in Philadelphia) so it’s no wonder that for the song’s video, Ellie and her camp opted for black & white tour footage. Despite not having been officially released yet, “Explosions” managed to hit the Top 20 on the UK Singles Chart, thanks to a well placed spot in a television advert.
After the massive, albeit, delayed success of her hit single “Lights,” not to mention a (mostly) sold out U.S. tour, British folktronica darling Ellie Goulding has finally hit the mainstream here in America. This was further evidenced today when Hawaiian-born Bob Marley–lovin‘ R&B/pop/soul superstar Bruno Mars announced Ellie Goulding as one of his “special guests” on his upcoming Moonshine Jungle World Tour. While I prefer to see Ellie in a much more intimate venue, there’s no denying just how MASSIVE an opportunity this is for her, opening for an artist of Mars’ calibre.
“Explosions” is the follow up to Goulding’s second Halcyon single, the equally lovely “Figure 8,” which was released in the UK back in December, when it peaked at #33. The single was complemented by a visual masterpiece of a music video directed by WIZ. The last song of Ellie’s to chart here in the states, “Anything Could Happen,” served as the album’s lead single, which to date has peaked at #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It’s the song that Goulding has been doing for all of her U.S. TV promo, including tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance so here’s hoping that she hits the Top 10 eventually. The song did manage to hit #1 on Billboard‘s Hot Dance Club Songs chart, so…there’s that.
