Mind of Mine, the debut solo album by ZAYN dropped last Friday, March 25th on RCA Records (iTunes / Spotify). While this year, March 25th was a joyous occasion for me (#NewMusicFriday + Carly Rae Jepsen at Terminal 5!) last year it was dark days. In, what must have been a very calculated move, the album release marks the one-year anniversary of Zayn’s departure from the group that made him famous—One Direction. That’s right folks, March 25th, 2015 was the day the internet was set ablaze by thousands of tearful YouTube and Vine uploads by 1D fans, lamenting about the end of days (AKA – One Direction going from 5 members to 4). *sad face emoji*
To commemorate this occasion (new album occasion, obviously—NOT the occasion of Zayn leaving 1D) Music Is My King Size Bed is giving away 3 digital copies of the album to 3 lucky Zayn fans. For details on how to enter and more information, head below. ?
Now, back when he was a member of One Direction, Zayn Malik always seemed to give off this sorta bad boy, James Dean-Rebel without a Cause kinda-vibe—dark and brooding, rarely smiling. To be honest, it was part of what appealed to me about him. He wasn’t perfect—far from it, in fact. If I’m being honest, I was never the biggest 1D fan, in fact I don’t think I’ve listened to any of their albums through from beginning to end. Boybands have never really been my thing—at least not since their heyday in the mid-aughts. As readers of this blog know, my tastes vary pretty widely, but much of my listening plate is filled with an unhealthy, American-sized portion of electronic pop (mostly from Europe), tossed with healthy portion of Ray LaMontagne-singer/songwriter-type vibes and a sprinkling of other genres thrown in for good measure, because after all “variety is the spice of life” (you know, since we’re going with the food analogy thing). So, when Zayn finally released his first solo single (the Levi Lennox / MYKL-produced “PiLlOwT4lK“) at the end of January, I did an about face. Pop music’s been throwing me for a real loop these days, first with Justin Bieber releasing an album full of music I actually like, and now Zayn ditching his boyband roots and going full-flex ALT-R&B, what is even happening right now? I don’t really know, but I’m not complaining.
Another thing I kinda liked about Zayn was how private of a person he appeared to be. Not much for talking during interviews, I was curious to see how he’d fare in full-on album promo mode but he seems to be taking it all in stride. Zayn had a busy schedule last week, including an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he performed one of the album’s up-tempo bangers, the XYZ-produced “Like I Would,” followed by a “ZAYN album release party,” during which fans were treated to an intimate live performance and Q&A with host Elvis Duran taking place at iHeartRadio Theater‘s very intimate stage and simultaneously streamed on a special radio broadcast. In addition, Zayn surprised fans by dropping a video for the song “BeFoUr” (see below) which was shot in Manchester, England and produced by Black Dog Films and the Directors Bureau. Sounds like the Zayn train is pacing at a steady clip. Here’s hoping it continues full-steam ahead. Zayn is a promising solo artist with a golden voice. I’m rooting for him here, I really am.
First single, “PiLlOwT4lK” made it’s Billboard Hot 100 debut at No. 1, as well as landing the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Digital Songs Chart and the UK Singles Chart, while the song’s steamy video (see above) has since amassed over 250 million views. Mind of Mine is available to download/stream now and comes in both a standard and deluxe edition. Target is also selling an exclusive deluxe version with additional bonus tracks.
