I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the very first NEW MUSIC FRIDAY than giving away some NEW MUSIC! I’ve been stanning (pretty hardcore) for this electronic pop trio called Years & Years ever since I heard their song “KING,” so I’m pretty pumped about the release of their debut album, COMMUNION, out today July 10th on Interscope. For more information and details on how to enter, check below.

Years & Years (in case you forgot) is a three-piece synthpop trio from the UK consisting of lead singer Olly Alexander, bassist Mikey Goldsworthy and keyboardist Emre Turkmen. While their sound is undeniably and wholeheartedly pop at it’s core, Years & Years has a knack for effortlessly blending genres (R&B, deep house, pop) together to form really polished sounding radio-friendly bops and gut-wrenching, raw electro-ballads. I find their sound really accessible, thanks largely to Alexander, whose awkward-shy public persona I happen to find incredibly charming. Another key factor in band’s accessibility (both in terms of radio & for the fans) is Olly’s voice. While not particularly powerful, Alexander exhibits an incredible amount of control, showcasing a light and delicate quality (“Memo“) in one song, then belting out a MASSIVE dance/pop chorus (“King“) in another. In “Foundation,” a beautiful pop ballad, Alexander’s vocals bring the emotion to the song, while relying on the production and instrumentation to bring the power and the volume. It’s really the perfect balance.
I have to say, it’s been pretty excited to watch Years & Years relatively QUICK rise to popularity here in America. While they aren’t yet universally known, they are attracting larger and larger crowds at their shows on this side of the pond, evidenced by the larger and larger venues they are starting to book. Case in point, check out the tour dates for their upcoming headlining tour which kicks off September 16th at Terminal 5 in New York City. Not too shabby guys! The music media and blogosphere has also been paying attention to these guys, with USA Today, BuzzFeed, and Huffington Post (to name a few) putting the band on their various 2015 ‘Artists To Watch‘ lists.
Prior to releasing COMMUNION, Years & Years put out their Y&Y EP (their first release with Interscope) and first official U.S. release. Back at home, the band released two EPs—Real and Take Shelter (Polydor) and saw the title track from the latter hit No. 1 on the iTunes UK Electronic Singles chart. COMMUNION was self-produced by the band, with a little help from collaborators like Mark Ralph (Hot Chip, Hot Natured, Franz Ferdinand) Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Ryn Weaver, Jessie Ware) and Mike Spencer (Foxes, John Newman, Ellie Goulding).
COMMUNION is out now (iTunes), as is a new remix EP for latest single “Shine” (watch the video ABOVE) featuring remixes by Max Sanna & Steve Pitron, Joe Goddard, Toyboy & Robin and Danny L. Harle (iTunes). For details on how to enter my giveaway, see BELOW.
