Prolific singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette unveiled the lyric video for her forthcoming new single, “Guardian” earlier today, premiering the clip on MetroLyrics.com after teasing fans with both the song lyrics and a teaser trailer for the song. “Guardian,” due May 15th on iTunes, is the lead single off of Morissette’s upcoming seventh studio album, Havoc and Bright Lights, which is set to be released August 28th via the Collective Sounds label, serving as her first release outside of the Warner Music Group. The album was produced by Joe Chiccarelli (Jason Mraz, The Strokes, MIKA) and acclaimed producer Guy Sigsworth, who has worked with the likes of Madonna (“What It Feels Like For A Girl,” “Nothing Fails“), Britney Spears (“Everytime,” “Someday (I Will Understand),” “Out from Under“) and of course Alanis Morissette (Album #6, Flavors of Entanglement) and will be her first new release in four years. Now, that’s a mouthful! A lot of other artists would have trouble spitting that out without losing his or her breath, but not Morissette. She’s been blessed with one of the most unique voices on the planet. Her powerful, yet quirky vocal delivery and unique phrasing has made her the butt of many a parody (even at her own hands), which if you think about it is really a complement. However which way you cut it, it’s undeniable, Alanis Morissette is truly one of a kind, and in a world filled with cookie cutter pop stars, ‘one of a kind’ is a rarity.
“Guardian” is the Alanis Morissette that we all know and love, a proper comeback after four years out of the spotlight. It’s singer/songwriter with a gritty rock & roll edge like only Alanis Morissette can deliver. “Guardian” is a pop-rock anthem filled to the brim with both soul and strength. Delicate and vulnerable in the verses, Morissette draws the listener in from the very first word, “You, you who has smiled when you’re in pain/You who has soldiered through the profane/They were distracted and shut down,” before leading a triumphant charge into the big chorus, proudly singing “I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian/I’ll be your warrior of care your first warden/I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand/The greatest honor of all, as your guardian.” It’s been a long four years Alanis. So glad you’re back!
Alanis Morissette released her last album, Flavors of Entanglement back in 2008, seeing it debut at #8 on the Billboard 200 chart. While the album failed to find a Billboard Hot 100 hit single, lead single “Underneath” did manage to hit #17 on Billboard‘s Triple A Chart, #27 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart as well as #45 on Hot Dance Club Play Charts thanks to an impressive remix package from Josh Harris, Morgan Page, RedTop, Lost Daze, John Dahlbäck, Dave Armstrong & Redroche. The album’s third single, the ever stunning “Not As We” peaked at #22 on Billboard‘s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, and featured an equally impressive collection of dance mixes from Jack Shaft, Blow-Up, Dangerous Muse, Eddie Amador, DJ Lynnwood and Holosound. Of course, it was Morissette’s 1998 breakthrough album, Jagged Little Pill, that cemented this talented singer/songwriter from Canada in our minds, selling 14.7 million copies and turning into the third biggest-selling album since Soundscan started tracking sales in 1991.
Today, Morissette is managed by The Collective, which started a a label last year, Collective Sounds, lead by former Warner Brothers executive Tom Biery and distributed by Sony‘s RED. Collective Sounds will release Morissette’s new album, Havoc and Bright Lights August 28th, preceded by the release of “Guardian” on May 15th (iTunes US).
