Sandi Thom is a Platinum-selling Scottish singer/songwriter, probably
BEST known for her 2006 hit single, “
I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair),” which topped the charts all over the world, including the UK, Australia, Germany and Ireland. On
August 14th (
August 27th in the UK), Thom will release her much anticipated fourth studio album,
Flesh and Blood, via
Guardian Angels Records, her own indie label that she started post
Sony/
RCA. The album’s first single, “
The Sun Comes Crashing Down,” is being offered as a free download on Sandi’s
official website. Listen to the new song
BELOW.
While Flesh and Blood might be Thom’s fourth album in total, it’s only her second released through Guardian Angels, the follow up to 2010’s critically acclaimed Merchants and Thieves, which peaked at #118 on the UK Albums Chart following it’s May 2010 release. The new album was produced by Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes and recorded at 16 Tons Studio in Nashville. Playing with Thom on the album we have Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and guitarist Audley Freed (Dixie Chicks, Train, Jakob Dylan). Also featured on the albums are special guests, singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie and the legendary Bobby Keys, a renowned saxophonist and Rolling Stones collaborator. Now that’s an ALL-STAR rock’n’roll lineup!
Having done the major label thing and now being an independent artist, Thom is a well-established professional in the industry, this much is clear. Even with all of this experience under her belt, Sandi considers this new album to be her coming of age record.
“All I ever want to do is write songs that connect with people. With this album I’ve finally found a place where I can make the very best music I can achieve. The people that only know me from ‘Punk Rocker’ won’t recognize me on this album.”
Hmm. Well, I guess you can consider me a part of THAT group. Aside from the occasional single, I haven’t really paid Sandi Thom any mind SINCE “Punk Rocker.” That being said, there’s definitely a DRASTIC difference between Thom’s earlier material and this new stuff. Admittedly, all I’ve heard is the new single, but if that’s any indication of the sound and vibe we can expect from her new album, then I’m excited. Everything about “The Sun Comes Crashing Down” is a different from “I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker,” from the vocals to the production, to the instrumentation. The new stuff is much richer, and more mature-sounding. Very promising indeed.
BELOW I’ve included two videos that Sandi recently unveiled via YouTube, of her covering “Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt and “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses. The videos are part of a weekly cover series updated EVERY THURSDAY on Sandi’s YouTube page so make sure you check back next week for a brand new cover.
Flesh and Blood will be out August 14th in America and August 27th in the UK. Check out this little EPK and learn more about the making of the album.
