I have to admit, I’m a little bit worried about Ricki-Lee, after her latest single “Do It Like That” fizzled out at #34 on the ARIA Singles Chart, following it’s March 23rd release in Australia. Why concerned? Well, for starters, the lead single off Ricki-Lee‘s currently untitled third album, “Raining Diamonds” has already achieved Platinum status with over 70,000 copies sold, becoming her eighth top 20 hit peaking at #19 on the ARIA Singles chart. That’s two singles down without even a hint of a new album.
While “Raining Diamonds” was flaw free in nearly every regard, “Do It Like That” is essentially a carbon copy of Ricki-Lee‘s 2007 international hit “Can’t Touch It” (AKA “U Wanna Little of This“). I’m afraid she’s lost the momentum now going into her third single and (hopefully, if it ever sees the light of day, third album). “Do It Like That” was written and produced by Brian Kierulf and Joshua Schwartz, the duo responsible for “Can’t Touch It,” which peaked at #2 on ARIA Singles Chart. While there’s something to be said about going with what you know, “Do It Like That” might have just been too similar to have made any impact.
While flippin’ FANTASTIC remixes by French DJ Fred Falke did turn the already club-friendly dance/pop cut into an honest-to-goodness club anthem (landing it at #3 on the ARIA Dance Chart), it clearly couldn’t sustain itself as a mainstream pop single. Pity for Ricki-Lee. Lord knows she’s been trying to redeem herself after drama at her old label nearly forced her to quit the industry altogether.
Check out the fun party video, directed by Emma Tomelty with kick-ass, booty-shakin’ choreography by Marko Panzic. The video is your fairly standard dance pop video, featuring a gorgeous Ricki-Lee stomping around in booty shorts with a troop of back up dancers wavin’ their arms around behind her. There’s even a large scale choreographed production number towards the end featuring Ricki and her dancers shakin’ it in front of a larger than life pink lighted “RICKI-LEE” sign. Unfortunately, the high production value here doesn’t make up for the fact that we’ve heard Ricki-Lee sing this song before.
“Do It Like That” is available to download (iTunes AU) today, including phenomenal remixes by Fred Falke, Lenno, Protokol and Fear of Dawn.
