Last week,
Adam Lambert unveiled the video for latest single, the
Bruno Mars co-penned dancefloor banger “
Never Close Our Eyes,” and
WOW was it worth the wait. While it was digitally released in America
April 17th, the
Dr. Luke/
Cirkut/
The Smeezingtons-produced dance jam is being more heavily promoted over in the UK, where it will serve as Lambert’s lead single off of
Trespassing, which is scheduled for release
July 2nd. The single will be released on
June 24th, backed by an impressive array of dance remixes from some of the UK’s biggest mixmasters, including peaktime pop mixers
Almighty, the ever-fantastic
Digital Dog and garage gods
Sunship.
The Dori Ozkowitz-directed video, appears to be set in a futuristic prison of some kind, in a post apocalyptic world. Taking visual cues from similarly set sci-fi films, such as 12 Monkeys and Gattaca, the “Never Close Our Eyes” video depicts the young inmates forced to take pills that strip them of their individuality, turning them into mindless drones. Apparently immune to the pills’ side effects, Lambert leads a revolt that ends in a brightly colored, neon-splattered dance sequence, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Lambert’s wooded rave in the video for “If I Had You.” AMAZING.
While “Never Close Our Eyes” was made available for download back in April, the single was only just recently sent to mainstream radio on May 29th so there’s still hope of it charting. The album’s lead single, “Better Than I Know Myself,” stalled out at #76 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Lambert’s lowest charting single to date.
Released May 15th on RCA Records, Lambert’s sophomore album Trespassing went on to debut at the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming Lambert’s first #1 album. What’s more, Lambert made history by becoming the first openly gay artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. Way to go Adam! Well deserved. Co-written by Lambert, Trespassing features top notch collaborations from Pharrell Williams, Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly, Benny Blanco, Bonnie McKee, Sam Sparro, Nikka Costa, Lester Mendez, BC Jean and more. In case you haven’t already, you can read my comprehensive review of Trespassing and get my thoughts on the whole record. In the meantime, make sure you watch the video for “Never Close Our Eyes” BELOW and download the single on iTunes US. UK fans, look out for “Never Close Our Eyes” when it’s released on June 24th, featuring a bonus remix by Alex Ghenea (iTunes UK)!Like me on Facebook
