Here is the video for Demi Lovato‘s newest single, “Give Your Heart a Break,” taken from her third studio album Unbroken. Maybe my age is to blame for this one, but I keep getting Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez confused. Am I crazy? There are so many similarities between the two girls, how can you not get them confused? Let’s see; they are both signed to Hollywood Records; they are both 19 years old; they both starred in Disney Channel series (Selena – Wizards of Waverly Place; Demi – Sonny with a Chance). Are they not the same person? I’m still a bit confused.
Really, the last song I listened to by Demi Lovato was her yawn of a ballad, “Skyscraper,” which was memorably covered on the U.S. version of X-Factor by sixth place runner up Drew Ryniewicz, who dedicated her performance to her best friend Shelby. While it may very well have been my distaste for schmaltzy pop ballads, I just never found myself connecting with that song or Lovato as a pop personality. For me, Gomez (and her band The Scene) just had a knack for making a current, fun, up-tempo pop tune and nine times out of ten, that’s usually what I’m looking for in a pop singer. Well, with “Give Your Heart a Break,” I finally get exactly what I want out of Lovato. It’s about damn time!
Released January 23rd, the decidedly dance-pop “Give Your Heart a Break” was penned and produced by Josh Alexander & Billy Steinberg, with Omar Aramburu serving as co-writer. Debuting at #70 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, the song also managed to peak at #29 on the Adult Top 40 chart, and #32 on the Pop Songs chart. While the repetitive “Give Your Heart a Break” hook gets a little grating at times, Lovato certainly can sing and shows as much with this single. While not nearly as commercially successful as her top ten hit “Skyscraper,” “Give Your Heart a Break” is way more up my alley musically and stylistically.
Demi Lovato released Unbroken on September 20th of last year where it peaked at an impressive #4 on the Billboard 200 chart. While working on the album, Lovato teamed up with top producers and songwriters including Timbaland, Ryan Tedder, Dreamlab, Rock Mafia, Toby Gad and more, turning out her most commercially viable album to date, with collaborations from DEV, Iyaz, Missy Elliott & Timbaland and Jason Derülo.
The Justin Francis-directed video for “Give Your Heart a Break” premiered on Lovato’s VEVO page April 3rd, following her performance of the single on American Idol March 15th.
